When we talk about giving up our power, most of us think about other people — our partners, parents, bosses, colleagues, or even “the system.” We imagine power as something that can be taken or controlled by someone outside of us.
But what if we’re giving it away much closer to home?
We don’t often realise how easily we hand over our power to our own overwhelm, our own doubt, or our own fear.
Last year, I got shingles — and when I reflected on it, I realised I had given my power away to my own stress. I hadn’t been listening to how I really felt about things. I was running on autopilot, ignoring my inner signals, and it showed up physically in my body.
Doubt, of course, lives in the mind. It’s that chattering voice that questions, analyses and tells us stories. Our inner knowing, though — that lives in the heart and the gut. That’s where truth and intuition live.
For example, I used to have affirmations pinned up around my house — you know, the classic “I am manifesting X” type of things. But one day, I looked at them and thought, these don’t actually make me feel good. They were constant reminders of what I didn’t yet have.
So I changed my approach. I decided to tap into the frequency instead — to connect with how I actually wanted to feel.
I asked myself, what do I love most? What makes me come alive? The answer was abundance — not just financial abundance, but abundance in all the beautiful forms life offers: laughter, creativity, connection, fitness, healthy diet, passion, nature.
So I changed my affirmation to:
“I am the effervescent and sparkly frequency and vibration of abundance every day.”
Now when I read that, it makes me happy. It lifts me immediately. It reminds me who I really am, that joy already lives inside me — it’s just about remembering to access it, to tune in, to reconnect.
Because that’s the thing — we can all fall into the trap of overthinking. What I call monkey mental mind chatter — the constant looping thoughts that fill up space in our heads and spiral us into negativity.
So I invite you to pause and ask yourself:
What are you giving your power away to?
Is it a routine that feels like a cage?
Are you stuck in “I should” energy — “I should do this, I should do that”?
If so, remember — you created those “shoulds.” You’re giving your power to an invisible structure that only you built.
Or perhaps you’ve given your power to your lack — lack of energy, motivation, clarity, inspiration. To apathy, fear, or the story that you’re somehow not ready yet, not good enough.
Whatever it is that’s keeping you stuck, your heart and gut already know the truth.
Tune in. Listen deeply.
And take your power back — not from others, but from all the subtle ways you’ve been giving it away to your own inner noise.
