I would suggest that that defensiveness is probably self induced. We defend things when we feel like we are being attacked, or when we feel insecure about something. Not everyone is going to “get it” or “get YOU” so if you simply answer their questions free from the story you’ve made up in your mind that you are projecting on to them, then you will most likely not feel so defensive anymore!
