I was so honoured to interview Dr. Helen Orombi on my first solo run of Beyond Birth Trauma – From Burden To Brilliance. She shared profound insights into the impact of generational and cultural conditioning on personal and collective healing. We discussed how our identities and healing journeys are shaped by the layers of experiences passed down through generations and the societal frameworks we grow up within.
In Uganda, where Helen was raised, the communal philosophy of Ubuntu—”I am because we are”—profoundly influenced her understanding of self and community, contrasting sharply with Western individualism. This upbringing instilled in her a strong sense of self and belonging, which she carries into her therapeutic practices.
Similar to my own work, Dr. Helen focuses on helping women dismantle survival-based patterns such as fear, unworthiness, and self-doubt. By exploring her family tree going back five generations, uncovering and confronting patterns like polygamy and the undervaluing of women’s education—she could identify issues that deeply impacted her own life choices and professional focus and re-write her story.
This generational understanding helped her understand the importance of rewriting one’s narrative to foster healing and growth. And the necessity of becoming conscious of one’s patterns and actively choosing to rewire the brain-body system to support the actualization of one’s desired self.
One of Dr. Helen’s main modality’s is using Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) tapping, for addressing psychological scars. EFT tapping involves stimulating specific meridian points on the body to reduce anxiety and fear, aiding individuals in processing emotions and realigning their subconscious memories.
Dr. Helen also runs the Awakening Women Collective, membership group allowing for the sharing of experiences and mutual empowerment, reinforcing her belief in the power of community in the healing process.
We are a product of our ancestors and besides only exploring personal and generational healing, it’s also important to celebrate cultural diversity and the strength found in collective wisdom.
Anyone looking to understand your birth trauma, ancestral wisdom, and the transformative power of acknowledging and overcoming whatever inherited patterns are holding you back, there are a variety of paths forward to help you step into a future where we are not just survivors, but empowered creators of our destiny.
