We all lead busy lives and often have a multitude of things pulling at us from different directions. If you’re a parent of young kids you also have their schedules to incorporate into your own. Work demands, family time, financial obligation, fitness goals and down time.
We’re taught from an early age that sacrifice is just part of life. That we cannot have it all or DO it all. Except that, without pressure, we can!
It’s no wonder so many people are in overwhelm and continually say there are not enough hours in the day! I’m a big fan of taking baby steps. They all add up. We have to be consistent however in taking those baby steps.
First we need to take a mental x-ray of our lives and see which area’s we are not completely in flow. Maybe we are just winging it through everything and that seems to work, up to a point, but we are always riding that adrenaline edge with no safety net.
How can we truly relax – our bodies and our minds – with that kind of invisible pressure weighing down on us every day? That’s when we sacrifice taking care of ourselves, or doing something we love because of other priorities. But this puts us in a vicious circle.
Let’s take fitness as an example. If you have 30 or more pounds to lose that can immediately feel overwhelming at the thought of having to shift all of that at once. And if you are not a regular exerciser drumming up motivation to start can be a roadblock right off the bat.
Look at your weakness with your diet: is it sugar? Carbs? Late night bingeing? Eating too much? Eating too many processed foods? Too much coffee all day every day? Too much alcohol?
Cut one thing out. When you make a small change it doesn’t feel so much like a sacrifice and your mental mind set can handle it better. Years ago when I was constantly being wined and dined in a relationship I naturally gained lots of weight. It didn’t make me feel good, sexy, or energised, it literally weighed heavy on my soul.
So I gave up alcohol for three months. Not forever. Sometimes it was hard like Valentines Day out for dinner with a beautiful bottle of wine…but not for me. I never used to drink that much before that relationship. In three months I lost 25 pounds just from giving up alcohol.
Alcohol converts into sugar in the body so in the process of getting off of red wine, I lost my craving for sugar and as a result stopped eating as many desserts. One baby step had a huge effect!
Don’t like to work out? Make it easy for yourself. Start with 5 minutes a day, it’ll easily increase to ten. Then your body will start to change and you’ll feel more energised and you’ll naturally start making healthier food choices so as not to undo your exercise efforts. It all works together!
What about your finances? Are you living in a month to month dread zone? Do you have fear around not having enough to cover all your bills? That’s really common.
But do you actually know all of your numbers? Do you know exactly how much money you spend on what every month? Do you know exactly how much money comes in?
Without knowing all of your numbers exactly, there is no way you can take control of your financial destiny. A wonderful book written for entrepreneurs but applicable to your expenses in general is “Profit First” by Mike Michalowicz.
It chunks down every aspect of your business to make sure you are taking out your paycheque first. It shows you how much income you need to balance your operating costs and pay your taxes every year without having to scrape around for it.
Essentially it helps you get very clear on exactly what you need to survive in your life and business. With that clear knowledge and understanding you can decide if you’re in the right job for you.

In order to get out of the sacrifice mind-set we must consistently take baby steps towards our goals. Once you commit to something it is much easier for you to stay committed to it when you start to see results, but you won’t see any results unless you start!
Change your thinking around sacrifice. Always work from your goals. If you are constantly focussed on what you want, instead of what you have to give up, you’ll be running towards your goals instead of taking baby steps.
