Why Am I So Tired All the Time? (And What Your Exhaustion Might Really Be About)

Do you feel like no matter how much rest you get, you’re still running on empty?

If you’re on a spiritual path, doing deep inner work — especially around early childhood, birth imprints, or ancestral healing — it’s not uncommon to find yourself feeling exhausted. Not just physically, but emotionally, energetically, even spiritually worn out.

You’re not alone. And you’re not broken.

So why is this kind of exhaustion showing up — and what you can do about it in a way that honors your body, your nervous system, and your soul?

Your Body Might Still Be Living in Survival Mode

If you came into the world under stress — a difficult birth, early separation from your mother, or a medicalized environment — your nervous system may have learned early on that it’s not safe to fully rest.

Even decades later, that imprint can still be running in the background. You may struggle to truly relax, even when you’re “off.” Or perhaps you feel guilty or anxious when doing nothing. You may be hyper-independent or avoid asking for help.

By engaging in somatic practices that gently soothe your nervous system you can create pockets of stillness where your body can feel safe, not just “be still.”

Inner child or birth healing work that rewrites your body’s early survival blueprint can also help and there are various ways to go about this from Watsu (shiatsu in the water), to EFT, to energetic embodiment practices and more.  Find one that resonates with you.

You’re Clearing More Than Just Your Own Stuff

Many on the spiritual path are not only healing personal wounds — they’re also transmuting family, ancestral, and even collective trauma. That’s sacred work… but it can take a toll.

Energetic fatigue isn’t always visible, but it’s real. Like, waking up tired even after a full night’s sleep. Or, being extra sensitive to other people’s emotions or energy.

Remember, it’s okay to rest. You are not here to carry everything. Obviously being grounded and in alignment is going to make a huge difference.  Trust me, I learned this the hard way!

Hot salt baths get everyone else’s energetic cooties off of you at the end of the day!  I never go to bed without one!

You’re Burning Out from “Being the Healer”

If you’re always the one holding space, processing deeply, or “doing the work” — you might be running on spiritual fumes.

Healing is powerful, but without integration and nourishment, it becomes another form of overdoing. Are you pushing yourself to constantly grow, instead of allowing yourself to be?  We all need integration time.

Do you believe you need to “fix” yourself to be worthy of rest, love, or ease? Making space for joy, pleasure, and lightness — not just shadow work, is essential to honour the Goddess side of yourself as well as the Warrior. Your value doesn’t come from what you process.

Maybe you need to look at that?

Your Exhaustion Might Be an Invitation

Sometimes, exhaustion isn’t a problem to solve — it’s a messenger. It may be your soul’s way of saying, slow down, something sacred is trying to emerge. In birth terms, this could be the “pause before the push” — the quiet before a rebirth.

Last year I got the message loud and clear!  I came down with shingles which zapped my central nervous system and literally forced me to stop.  When I finally stopped resisting, I bought some lounge chairs and decided to “stop” laying out in the garden in the sunshine!  If I couldn’t do anything, I figured I may as well enjoy the sun and get some vitamin D in me!

Let yourself be led by curiosity, not self criticism. And stop trying to push through, it really doesn’t help!

You Need More Sleep – an obvious place to start

Sleep is necessary.  Try all the known things like a set bed time, no screens an hour before bed, limit caffeine from early in the day, make sure your room isn’t too warm, and that it’s properly dark.

I bought a sleep app to see what that said. I don’t agree with it, but it’s making me more aware of my sleep patterns. And, like anything if you want to change something or heal it, you’ve got to have some awareness first.

You’re probably not lazy. But if you’ve been feeling tired all the time, don’t rush to fix it. Instead, try slowing down and listening to your body.

Find out if you’re missing any minerals or nutrients, get a blood test so you know what’s going on inside.

Often your exhaustion is a sacred signpost — pointing you back toward gentleness, presence, and trust.

You’re allowed to rest.

You’re allowed to heal at your own pace.

And you’re allowed to create a life where you don’t have to earn your worth through effort.

Hormones can also be a big disruptor, or a post viral infection.  Do your homework and eliminate what it’s not and then be gentle with yourself.

I’m just learning about high doses of Vitamin D. The more people I speak with, it seems I’m the last to know!

Don’t suffer in silence.  Share your stuff with close friends and family who you trust, you’ll find you’re not alone and you may learn some cool stuff!

I was sharing my tiredness with a close friend and she told me about her awesome naturopath. Oh… What a good idea!  So I contacted him and now I’m on a regime to help with energy and brain fog, and yes, high doses of Vitamin D!
